Antarctica - The White Continent

Visiting Antarctica has been the dream of a lifetime, and Halina and I are very fortunate to have had that opportunity. This gallery presents some of the photos I captured there, and some of the watercolor paintings I made during the trip.

Where Earth Meets Heaven

Sailing south out of Ushuaia, Argentina, the first sight of land of the Antarctic peninsula is very welcoming after crossing the infamous Drake Passage. Here, on one of the first outcroppings we saw, land seems to actually reach up into heaven.

Gentle Gentoo Penguins

Relax on a summer day, atop a small iceberg in one of the many inlets along the Antarctic Peninsula.

Icebergs calve from glaciers frequently, and erosion by water forms ice arches and many other beautiful forms.

South Georgia Island

A refuge for millions of fur seals, raising their families on the gentle sandy shores. As glaciers from the rugged mountains slowly melt, small fresh water rivulets are formed by the melt waters and lead out to the sea, as in this photo.

Countless King Penguins

Populate the shores of South Georgia Island. The yellow throats and rosy colored beaks closely resemble Emperor penguins, the largest extant penguin, which lives farther south along the edges of the Weddell Sea.

Leopard Seals

These giant predators’ favorite food source is penguins. You can tell how aggressive these creatures are just by looking at its set of teeth. Leopard seals are quite large, and their only natural predators are orcas.
